OVERVIEW
Puncak
Perched in the mountains south of Jakarta, Puncak is West Java's beloved highland escape. The winding road from the capital climbs through lush valleys to a cool plateau blanketed in tea plantations, flower gardens, and misty forests. At over 1,000 metres above sea level, the air is fresh and the pace slows instantly. Puncak has been a retreat for centuries -- from Dutch colonial officers seeking respite from the tropical lowlands to modern Jakartans escaping the weekend heat. The region offers a refreshing contrast to Indonesia's beach destinations, with dramatic mountain scenery, safari parks, and some of the country's finest tea estates.
Puncak offers a completely different side of Indonesia -- cool mountain air, verdant landscapes, and a tranquil pace. It is ideal as a day trip from Jakarta or as a restorative stop between city and coast. The tea plantation tours are a sensory delight, and the Taman Safari is one of Southeast Asia's best wildlife parks.
